Need To Make Some Improvements In Your Home? 2 Changes You Can Start With

If you need to make some home improvements, you can start out by refinishing your wood floors and painting your kitchen cabinets. Both of these things can make a big difference in the way they look, and when everything is done it will look like you have brand new wood flooring and kitchen cabinets.

Refinish Hardwood Floors

Refinishing old hardwood floors can bring them back to life again. If you have never done this before, you should consider hiring someone to refinish your hardwood floors for you. This will ensure the job is done correctly.

If you plan to do it on your own, do not refinish the floor when there is high humidity. This is because wood is porous and will absorb moisture. If you do refinish on a humid day it will work, but it will take much longer for the floor to dry.

You will not be able to put furniture back into the room for several days. People may still walk on it, however, so make sure you put down some area rugs to prevent scratching. If you have any pets, trim their nails, if needed.

Refinishing hardwood floors is very dusty so you will need to protect items in nearby rooms, such as your furniture, from the dust. There will also be an odor from the refinishing product that will stay around for a few days so open windows if you can and ventilate the room with fans.

Paint Your Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Simply painting your cabinet doors can make a huge difference in the way your cabinets look. You can even choose to paint them a different color.

Cleaning the cabinets is the most important part of this job. If you have had your cabinets for some time, they likely have a lot of grease built up on them. Purchase a degreaser to get the grease off. If the cabinets are very dirty, you will have to clean them a few times.

Remove all hardware from the doors and then unscrew the hinges from the doors and remove them.

Use sandpaper to sand all over the wood to roughen up the finish so the paint will adhere to the cabinets. When sanding, go in the direction of the grain of the wood.

Use a paintbrush to apply one coat of primer to the wood. Start out brushing with the grain and then against the grain. Continue doing this until all wood is primed. Allow the primer to completely dry and then flip the wood over and prime the other side in the same way.

Wait for several hours and then use sandpaper to smooth any brushstrokes that you left behind when you were applying the primer.

Now you are ready to paint your cabinet doors. When brushing on the paint go with the grain of the wood. Apply a thin coating at a time so the paint will not drip. Start out painting the front of the cabinet doors and when dry flip them over and paint the other side. Let the paint dry for a few hours and then apply a second coat if preferred.

Now that your floors and your cabinets look brand new, you can continue on making other home improvements.
